Hiniling ni Joel Escorial, ang self-confessed gunman sa pagpatay sa veteran broadcaster Percy Lapid, sa isang korte sa Las Piñas na payagan na ibaba sa kasong homicide ang isinampang murder case laban sa sa kanya.
“In the interest of justice and for the mutual benefit of the State and the accused, it is most respectfully prayed to this Honorable Court to allow accused Joel Escorial y Salve to enter into plea bargaining to lesser offense of homicide,” sabi sa kanyang isang pahinang motion na inihain sa Las Piñas Regional Trial Court 254.
Matatandaan noong Marso 2023 ay sinampahan ng kasong two counts of murder sina dating Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gerald Bantag at dating deputy security officer Ricardo Zulueta sa pagpatay kina Lapid at umano’y middleman Jun Villamor.
May nakitang probable cause para isakdal sina Escorial, Israel Dimaculangan, Edmon Dimaculangan, at isang kilala lamang bilang Orlando sa kasong “murder as principals by direct participation.”
“After conferring with accused-movant [Escorial] and informing him of the right to plea-bargain, he consented to plead guilty to the lesser offense of Murder under the RPC,” sabi sa motion.
“The instant motion is not intended to delay the proceedings but solely for the reasons above-cited to serve the best interest for justice,” dagdag nito.
Ito ang kinompirma ng DOJ Panel of Prosecutors.
Inianunsyo rin sa isang tweet ng kapatid ni Lapid na si Roy Mabasa ang development sa kaso.
Kapag pinagbigyan aniya ang hirit ni Escorial, nahaharap siya sa parusang reclusion temporal o hanggang 20 taong pagkabilanggo.
Tinututukan aniya ng kanilang mga abogado ang usapin.
“Although there is a question of whether he will qualify or not, we will see how it will go. For us, justice is when the mastermind/s are put behind bars,” sabi ni Mabasa sa isang kalatas.
Ilang araw matapos paslangin si Lapid noong 3 Oktubre 2023 ay sumuko si Escorial dahil sa pangamba sa kanyang kaligtasa.
Inginuso niya ang magkapatid na Dimaculangan at Orlando bilang kanyang mga kasabwat.
Habang si Villamor naman ay pinatay sa New Bilibid Prison (NBP) noong 18 Oktubre at ayon sa autopsy na isinagawa ni forensic pathologist Dr. Raquel Fortun may nakita na may “history of asphyxia by plastic bag suffocation.”
Nananatiling pugante sina Bantag at Zulueta hanggang sa kasalukuyan.
